The House of Representatives voted today to protect the US Pledge of Allegiance (Pledge Protection Act) from the US court system. The vote, 247-173, was split down party lines with republicans supporting the bill. Democrats say that the bill is unconstitutional as it supersedes a branch in government and one of the checks to the balance. The bill is expected to die in the Senate with no vote scheduled. This all comes at a time when 'under god' has been challenged in the courts and failed on a technicality.

"I love the pledge," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat. But "this bill ... violates the spirit of pledge by professing a lack of faith in the constitutional framework."
